Our Voyage - An Atlantic Circuit

IMG_8620.jpeg

Our journey starts in Lagos, Portugal on 1st October 2023 and should end in or around the same place sometime early June 2024. There are four legs to the voyage:

First Leg - Portugal to Gran Canaria. 800 NM

From Lagos we head South towards the Lanzarote in Canary Islands, with a stopover in Madeira if the weather allows. From Lanzarote we take in Fuerteventura on the way to Gran Canaria.

Second Leg - Canaries to The Caribbean. 2800 NM

Gran Canaria is the start point for the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC). This is an annual event in which around 200 sailing boats cross the Atlantic together. Some friendly rivalry, great fun and mutual support. The ARC is run by the World Cruising Club and you can visit the ARC website here. This is a classic downwind Trade Wind sail and we will hopefully use a lot of our spinnaker in the picture on the left.

Third Leg - Cruising the Caribbean, winding-up in Antigua. 600 NM

This is the relaxing bit! Sue and I will spend 10 weeks cruising the Windward and Leeward Islands from St Vincent and the Grenadines up to the British Virgin Islands. We will end up in Antigua late Feb '24 and the trip pauses there for a couple of months.

Fourth Leg - Antigua to Portugal. 3800 NM

The long run home to Europe. To pick up the SW Trade Winds back, we first need to head nearly 1000 miles North towards Bermuda, then head East to the Azores. After a stopover in the Azores we will make for Southern Portugal and complete the Circuit.
